Welcome to my law office's website. My name is Marylynn Thompson. This website will hopefully tell you a little bit about me, my areas of practice and my philosophy of practice to assist you in deciding whether to hire me as your guide through the confusing halls of justice.
I believe that the laws affecting a client's case should be understood by the client. In addition to working for my client's interests, I believe in explaining to the client exactly what the law is and the various methods available for achieving the desired objectives. I also believe in telling the client when his or her expectations are unrealistic. In other words, in representing you, I will attempt to provide you with all the information necessary for you to participate fully in the legal process and make well informed decisions.
Immigration Law - this is restricted to immigrating to Canada and includes refugee law.
Criminal Law - this is just what the name implies.
Wills and Powers of Attorney - this is preparation of these documents, but does not include probating wills or estate law.

This is the area that scares people the most when deciding to hire a lawyer. However, just as you go to work in order to make a living, I go to work for the same reason. And since what I'm selling is what I've learned through years of education and experience, what you are paying for is my time and knowledge. Keep in mind as well that the fees you pay do not go directly into my pocket. They go to pay for overhead, law society fees, continuing legal education, office expenses and insurance, among other things.
That said, please feel free to discuss the cost of a particular transaction with me. Some jobs are billed at a set fee. For example, if you want to have a simple will drawn up. Other areas are billed on an hourly rate since the amount of time involved can not be estimated accurately. At this time I can only accept Legal Aid for Refugee matters and Criminal matters.
